Court Interpreter Workshop

The Tennessee Language Center’s Court Interpreter Workshop is your first step toward becoming a state-credentialed court interpreter. 

This 14-hour, fully online workshop is approved by the Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts and prepares you to begin the certification process.

Why Become a Court Interpreter?

This workshop is mandatory for anyone pursuing court interpreter registration or certification in Tennessee. Tennessee’s courts are experiencing a growing need for qualified interpreters in various languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Vietnamese and more.

Court interpreters play a vital role in ensuring justice and equal access for individuals with limited English proficiency.

Who Should Take This Workshop?

  • People with some interpretation experience who speak English and one other language fluently and want to become certified court interpreters in the State of Tennessee.
  • Current interpreters who want to improve their skills by becoming certified.
  • Individuals from other states who wish to work in Tennessee as a court interpreter.


Participants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Speak English and one other language fluently.

Workshop Details

  • Location: All classes are held on Zoom.
  • Time: Six evening classes over two weeks.
  • Class Length: Each class is two-and-a-half hours.
  • Cost: tuition plus materials is $325.

  • Classes are from 6–8:30 p.m. CT on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Refund Policy

  • Students who withdraw before the first day of class or within the first two class hours: Full refund.
  • Students who withdraw after the first two class hours: No refund.
Pathway to Become a

Certified Court Interpreter

Certification testing is conducted directly by the Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts.

1. Complete This Training

2. Pass Written Exam

Pass a written exam in English and the target language.

3. Pass Oral Interview

Pass an oral proficiency interview in English and the target language.

4. Pass Background Check

Pass a background check. Apply to become a registered court interpreter after passing.

5. Pass Oral Exam

Pass a three-part oral exam.

6. Apply for Certification

Apply to become a certified court interpreter after passing the oral exam.
