Medical Interpreter Training

Hand holding a glass globe over a stethoscope to symbolize a medical interpreterIf you are fluent in English and at least one other language, like helping people, and are comfortable in medical settings, a job as a medical interpreter might interest you. And the Tennessee Language Center can help you on that path.

Our program prepares you to test to become a certified medical interpreter through either the CCHI or the NBCMI, the two organizations that certify medical interpreters in the U.S. The TLC program is a collaboration between the Tennessee Language Center (TLC) and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). This course is offered fully online and can be taken anywhere in the U.S.

Course Structure:

  • 50 hours of theory
  • 16 hours of simulations
  • 4 hours of observations

Course Schedule:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • 6:30-8:30 p.m. CST
  • for 15 weeks

Course Cost:

Tuition $975* if paid in one installment; or 3 installments of $325 (totaling $975)

Textbook cost is included in tuition.

Course Pre-Requisites

Open to anyone who successfully completes a dual-language assessment.

The required score is 10 out of 12. See the scoring guide for more information.

The cost is $66 per test. You will need to take two tests: English and the other language you speak.

Refund Policy:

Students who withdraw before the first day of class or within the first 12 class hours: Full refund
Students who withdraw after the first 12 class hours: No refund
