Court Interpreter Training

Gavel resting on a desk with a book and balance in the backgroundIf you are fluent in English and at least one other language, like helping people, and are comfortable in legal settings, a job as a court interpreter might interest you. And the Tennessee Language Center can help you on that path.

The Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) is the organ in charge of credentialing court interpreters in our state. Our program, “Court Interpreter Ethics and Skills Building Workshop,” is the first requirement to becoming a Certified Court Interpreter in the State of Tennessee. Additional questions may be answered by contacting TLC at cipd@tennessee.edu

Course Structure:

  • 14 hours of online classroom time

Course Schedule:

  • 6:00-8:30 p.m. CST
  • for 6 sessions over two weeks

Course Cost:

Tuition $325

Course Prerequisites:

18 years or older

Fluent in English and at least one other language

Course Content:

  • Introduction to Court Interpreting and the Credentialing Process
  • From Crime to Court; The Role of the Interpreter
  • Roles and Code of Ethics of the Interpreter
  • Modes of Interpretation
  • Vocabulary Development
  • Court Interpreter Certification Examinations, Jury Instructions and Ethical Challenges

Refund Policy:

Students who withdraw before the first day of class or within the first 2 class hours: Full refund

Students who withdraw after the first 2 class hours: No refund

After the Course:

We send the AOC the information that you have completed the course. They will reach out to you to directly schedule the additional assessments necessary to be granted the designations of “register” and “certified” court interpreter in the State of Tennessee.
